Portimão MotoGP Circuit: Features

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve was opened in 2008 and in recent years has earned a prominent place in both motorcycle and car racing competitions, surpassing another famous Portuguese circuit, namely that of Estoril.

The Portimão circuit, 4.5 km long, includes 15 turns and significant elevation changes both downhill (up to 12%) and uphill, a series of slopes that can challenge even the most experienced riders. The longest straight, the initial one, is nearly a kilometer in length.

Portuguese MotoGP: History and Trivia

Portugal had the opportunity to first "taste" the Motorcycle World Championship in 2000, when the championship landed in Estoril. However, due to the many MotoGP events in nearby Spain, after 2012 the country had to bid farewell to the championship.

It was Covid that brought MotoGP back to Portugal: in 2020, following the heavy calendar reshuffling caused by the pandemic, the return of the Motorcycle World Championship to Portugal was announced, but this time in the Algarve.

Here are some interesting facts about the circuit and the Portimão MotoGP:

To be exact, before 2000 Portugal had already hosted a MotoGP stage in 1987, but the race took place at the Spanish circuit of Jarama, near Madrid, because the Estoril circuit was not yet homologated for motorcycle racing.
The following year, Portugal tried again, and the event was actually included in the Motorcycle World Championship calendar, but the Portuguese Federation withdrew the candidacy, and the race was last-minute moved to Jerez de la Frontera, again in Spain.

The legendary Valentino Rossi is the most successful rider in the Portuguese GP, with five victories (four in MotoGP and one in 500cc).
