British MotoGP: Where It Takes Place
Silverstone MotoGP Circuit: Features
Silverstone circuit has a unique history: it was originally built as a RAF military airfield during World War II. The first post-war races at Silverstone, starting from 1947, used the three airstrips (expressly connected by three curves) as the track.
Since then, Silverstone has undergone numerous modifications and improvements, leading to its current configuration, introduced in 2011. With its 5.9 km of track and 18 turns, it is the longest circuit in the Motorcycle World Championship.
British MotoGP: History and Trivia
The British MotoGP took its first steps in Silverstone: here, in 1977, the first British race valid for the Motorcycle World Championship was held, won in the 500cc class by Pat Hennen.
In 1987, the British GP moved to Donington Park in the East Midlands, where it remained for a long time. But the English "affair" with Silverstone never faded, and eventually the race returned to Northamptonshire starting from 2010 (until now).
