For several years now, the Austrian MotoGP has been held at the Red Bull Ringcircuit located near Spielberg bei Knittelfeld, a small municipality in Styria, Austria, not far from the city of Graz.
Short, featuring a couple of fast segments and some strong decelerations, it's a challenging circuit even for the most expert riders.
Austria MotoGP: History and Trivia
The first edition of the Austrian Motorcycle Grand Prix dates back to 1971: from then until 1994, the race was held at the Salzburgring in Salzburg. In 1996, the competition moved to the A-1 Ring in Spielberg, but just for two editions. Motorcycle lovers had to wait until 2016 to see the Motorcycle World Championship come back to Austria, to the current Red Bull Ring.
Here are some interesting facts about the Red Bull Ring circuit and the Austrian MotoGP:
In 1995, the Austrian MotoGP was removed from the Motorcycle World Championship calendar because the Salzburgring was considered too dangerous.
The subsequent return to the A-1 Ring in 1996 was short-lived due to the low attendance, a problem that has not affected the Austrian MotoGP in its most recent incarnation.
As of 2023, the rider with the most victories in the Austrian MotoGP is the Italian Andrea Dovizioso , who finished first three times in his career.
