Mugello MotoGP Circuit: Features
Opened in 1974 to replace the road circuit located in the same area, which was deemed too dangerous following a series of accidents involving not only the drivers but also the public, the Mugello Circuit is just over 5 km long and includes 15 turns and an uphill straight over 1 km long.
Characterized by challenging gradients and curves, the Mugello MotoGP circuit allows riders to fully express their technical abilities.
Italy MotoGP: History and Trivia
Italian Motorcycle Grand Prix's origins span back in time: its first edition took place in 1914, moving over the years between Turin, Monza, Rome and, after World War II, to Milan and Faenza.
In 1949, following the birth of the Motorcycle World Championship, the Italian GP (then known as the GP delle Nazioni) was one of the very first competitions to be included in the world championship.
That first race took place at the National Autodrome of Monza, a circuit that hosted the Italian MotoGP on a permanent basis until 1968. From there, Monza took turns for some years with the circuits of Imola, Misano Adriatico , and Mugello. In the end, however, the latter prevailed, and since 1994, the Mugello MotoGP has become a regular event in the Motorcycle World Championship's calendar, interrupted only in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.
Here are some interesting facts about the circuit and the Mugello MotoGP:
The Mugello circuit is owned by Ferrari.
The most awarded rider at the Italian MotoGP is the legendary Giacomo Agostini, who has achieved over the years a total of 13 victories in the 350cc and 500cc classes.
As for MotoGP, Valentino Rossi is the real hero, with a remarkable 7 victories, obtained in consecutive years from 2002 to 2008.
