The Catalan Motorcycle Grand Prix takes place in the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain, and more precisely at the Catalunya Circuit in Circuito di Montmeló, a small municipality near Barcelona.
Montmeló MotoGP Circuit: Features
Officially inaugurated for the 1992 Olympic Games (and hosting the Formula 1 GP since 1991), the Montmeló Circuit, also known as Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya or Circuit de Catalunya, features a track just over 4.5 km long consisting of 14 turns and a very long straight (over 1 km) located between the final and the first turn. A wavy track with both fast and slow curves, it is among the most well-known and appreciated circuits in the Motorcycle World Championship.
Catalunya MotoGP: History and Trivia
In 1991 the newly-branded European Motorcycle Grand Prix took place in the Jarama circuit, near Madrid, replacing the Yugoslavian stage. Starting from the following year, the event was moved to the Circuit de Catalunya, until it took on its current name in 1996. Since then, the Catalan Motorcycle Grand Prix has taken place every single year.
Here are some interesting facts about the circuit and the Catalan MotoGP:
The rider with the most victories at this venue is the legendary Italian champion Valentino Rossi, who has won a total of ten first places across various categories (including six in MotoGP).
Interestingly, the 2004 and 2005 editions of the MotoGP saw the exact same trio on the podium: first Rossi, second Sete Gibernau, and third Marco Melandri.
In 2009, the Montmeló circuit set the stage for the memorable challenge between then-teammates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, with the former overtaking the latter in the final turn, clinching what many experts consider one of the most incredible victories in MotoGP history.
